Today I will be delving deep into the history of MCRPG, it's creator, and several staff members in an attempt to determine why MCRPG's leaderboard and server have both been offline for several days.
To make this mega-thread manageable I will be using collapsible boxes to make it easier to read.
IMPORTANT: IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING BEFORE COMMENTING THEN READ THE SECTION ABOUT HCLEWK'S TWITTER - you can thank me later...
Let me set the scene.
On September 12 @ 11:46 PM @CloBunny mentioned in the Discord chat that the Leaderboard page (www.mcrpg.com/leaderboards) was offline and not working.
The following day @ 1:54 AM @BlueGuyARed confirmed this before @Clobunny and @Wik confirmed the server going offline.
Minecraft Forum server stats
According to stats from the Minecraft Forums the last time a player connected to the server was September 8 @ 20:10 for about 10 to 15 minutes.
It is also important to note some of the stats shown on this page. The server is pinged regularly and is definitely off-line, and - according to the Player stats the server has been relatively inactive for a long time.
This is all the immediate data we can gain from this source, so let us move onto a series of tit-bits of information that may be of use to players in order to draw any conclusions.
MCRPG domain name auction
Hclewk originally owned the MCRPG domain name, which he purchased from GODADDY.com. The domain is about 4 years old and - most importantly - will expire exactly 5 months from now. He attempted to sell it through auction on https://flippa.com/5192820-mcrpg-com about 7-8 months before starting work on MCRPG.
The sellers notes are as follows:
I have this domain left over from when I was running a multi million dollar Minecraft server network, which I recently sold. Never actually used the domain for anything.
The Auction itself ended 428 days ago - or around 1 1/2 years ago - with zero bids. You can also note that Hclewk was looking for bids of $2500 or more, so was perhaps expecting the auction to be popular. A final point of interest from this source is that Hclewk had previously been in two transactions totalling $365 - although this bears little relevance to the case.
The next piece of information is related to the prevalence of MCRPG minecraft servers throughout the internet as well as how this may have affected both the popularity and attention gained by Mistborns release.
#MCRPG and r/MCPvP
The Reddit page of MCPVP had several posts related to MCPVP on them (https://www.reddit.com/r/McPVP/) as well as the Twitter #MCRPG hashtag (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23mcrpg&src=typd).
You can note here that the Twitter hashtag has fallen into disuse, last being used in relation to Mistborn on June 6 (https://twitter.com/RemedialRob/status/739999171646656516).
Also the Reddit thread - last active in relation to Mistborn 3 months ago - received very little in the form of positive response, the few comments to the release of the server being related to connection issues.
Prevalence of MCRPG servers and plugins
A final tit-bit of information bears witness to the prevalence of servers and plugins using the MCRPG name - while many exist one recently active server lies in South Korea (http://cafe.naver.com/mcw1217) while a Bukkit plugin of the same name also exists (https://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/mc-rpg/) - bear in mind however that this plugin is unrelated to the themes of MCRPG and was in fact released in early 2014, I have only chosen to include it to show how common the MCRPG name is in order to suggest why the server didn't receive the attention we all felt it should have.
If you are still here, congratulations! Now we can start looking at several staff members Twitter accounts to see if any information can be found there.
Kurtis Welch - aka @Hclewk - our beloved founder and developer who previously owned the multi-million dollar Minecraft server network MCPvP.
Kurtis tweeted this on August 20 :
He also engaged in a brief convo with another twitter user:
Now, although Massive Choons frames the question in reference to MCRPG and it's existence in general, Hclewk replies in a far more shifty way, suggesting he thinks the question is related to Season 2.
Although we have been teased about Season 2 for some time any news is good news - particularly denials that are far from sincere.
I genuinely think that this is the single most important piece of information available from Hclewk's twitter feed - so much so that I may go so far as to say that this solves the mystery altogether. That Hclewk mentioned how excited he was about a new project on August 20th could mean so many things, but it definitely brings hope that he hasn't decided to write off the project.
It is worth mentioning that either the staff are completely in the know about this and so have decided to act oblivious or confused over the issue - or are as in the dark as we are.
Everyone that is, except @LlamasATA - she's to busy as of late with Bake-Off...
Case in point - no-one truly knows whats happening at the moment, except @Hclewk... but even that Im not that sure.
Thanks for reading this thread - please comment all of your ideas in relation to whats happening atm + any enlightenment you may be able to offer on the subject.
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
I noticed on the Discord server LlamaATA's contribution on the subject (commenting on this post indirectly)
- Apparently Hclewk hasn't shared info on the subject to the staff chat
- And she believes the new project isn't Minecraft related
Based on that it would seem that our prospects of Hclewk continuing to develop MCRPG are slim - or THE END IS NEAR!!!
